ADVNTRgoals: A Concept Piece

ADVNTRgoals, an app that I created for a specific individual, was the first dip I took into user experience. ADVNTRgoals blends soical networking, user rating systems, and gps to help Kelsey get the most of her freetime.

The Challenge

For my first project and venture into UX, I was tasked with building an app that would solve a problem that one of my peers was having. My user was Kelsey.

Kelsey told me about her daily life, the things she likes to do, and some of her daily frustrations.

She loves living in the PNW because of the beautiful scenery, but finds that she doesn’t have a lot of time to get outdoors. She doesn’t know where to go or how long a particular outing would take, so it’s hard to fit things into her busy schedule. Kelsey wishes she could get outside for short outings and be more spontaneous.

I wanted to create an app to help Kelsey keep track of places she'd like to visit and to allow her to feel more fulfilled when she has free 

The Research

I began by doing an extensive interview with Kelsey. I wanted to learn what she was interested and why she was drawn to her current hobbies. Our preliminary interview was followed by shorter conversations to ensure that I was creating a product that would be centered around her needs. From our interviews, I built out a User Profile for Kelsey.

  • I learned that Kelsey loves to use lists to organize and prioretize her day.
  • She likes to stay connected with her peers.
  • She wants to learn and see reviews of local adventures based on what her friends think.

It seemed that what Kelsey really needed was an app that would generate lists of activities in her area organized by how long they took to complete. I also wanted to include a way for Kelsey and her friends to share the outdoor adventures that they’d been on through the app.

After completing a competative/comparative analysis, I found that the apps were often full of unsued features or focused on more intense outdoor expedition.

I found that these apps focused on more lengthy outdoor expeditions, not short trips that could be fit into a busy schedule. These apps also included lots of features that wouldn’t be very useful for someone like Kelsey, and would probably discourage her from using it.

I wanted to keep my app simple and easy to use without a lot of extra, bloated features.

Wireframes and Design

 

So I started to sketch out ideas and eventually came up with and app that I called ADVNTRgoals.

The name came about naturally. On social media, I constantly see the hashtags, #relationshipgoals, #travelgoals, #goals and combined that concept with removing most vowels from “adventure.” It all fell into place when the I made the logo.

I built out a user flow and paper prototype to test on Kelsey.

After that I created prototype screens using Sketch and then used InVision to create a clickable prototype.

Going Forward

If I have time in the future to continue working on this app, I would start with doing more user tests to see where the design could be refined.

Once I had found enough research to better understand what the user needs -interviews, surveys, affinity mapping, and persona development- I'll iterate on the current screens and continue to develop more complete flows. From that point, it's back to testing, validating, and iterating.

I learned a lot from this first experience. It provided me with the first taste of interviewing a stranger in hopes of finding a solution to a problem. The process prepared me to move forward into larger projects because it was a digestible way for me to understand the phases of UX and accomplish them in a short amount of time.
